A self-braking descender is one of the most important devices in a rope access or rescue system. Here are the criteria professional buyers use, illustrated with the Camnal CM-01 pulley descender.
1. Applicable standard
EN 12841 covers rope adjustment devices for rope access; type C devices are descender-type working-line adjusters. The CM-01 is certified to EN 12841-C and to China’s fire and rescue standard XF494-2023.
2. Load ratings
Check both the working load and the minimum breaking strength. The CM-01 has a 5 kN working load and a minimum breaking strength of at least 27 kN.
3. Rope compatibility
Always match the device to the rope diameter range stated by the manufacturer – 10–12 mm for the CM-01. Using ropes outside that range can affect braking performance.
4. Hauling efficiency
An integrated pulley lets the descender double as a rope-system controller in rescue. The CM-01 pulley reaches at least 85% efficiency, so teams can haul and release quickly.
5. Side-plate design
An openable side plate that stays attached means the device can be loaded onto the rope without disconnecting it from the anchor or harness, reducing the risk of dropping it. On the CM-01 the plate also closes automatically under load.
6. Anti-panic function
Some descenders lock if the handle is pulled too far. The CM-01 deliberately omits this so it lowers smoothly at low loads or on gentle slopes – one reason it is intended for rescue teams and experienced users.
