Carabiner Strength Ratings: Major Axis, Minor Axis and Gate Open (kN)

Every carabiner is marked with strength values in kN. Knowing what they mean helps you specify the right connector for rope access, rescue and industrial safety.

Major axis

The strongest loading direction, typically 20–35 kN on aluminium carabiners.

Minor axis

Side loading strength, usually lower than major axis. Avoid cross-loading in critical systems.

Gate open

Strength when the gate is not fully closed. Screw-lock and auto-lock gates reduce this risk.
